New research suggests the Gulf Stream could shift position if the Atlantic ocean circulation weakens. That circulation system, known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), acts like a giant conveyor belt transporting heat around the planet. If it slows or changes course, it could affect weather patterns across North America and Europe.
Meanwhile, climate models are also watching the Pacific Ocean as the current La Niña phase fades. Some forecasts suggest El Niño could return later this year — and possibly become a strong or even “super” El Niño event.
When you combine extreme weather outbreaks, ocean current changes, and large climate cycles like El Niño, scientists say the global climate system may be entering a very active period.
In this episode we break down:
• The deadly tornado outbreak and severe storms across the U.S.
• Record-size hail and extreme weather reports
• New research about a possible Gulf Stream shift
• The mysterious North Atlantic “warming hole” anomaly
• Greenland ice melt and freshwater entering the ocean
• Why scientists are watching the Atlantic circulation closely
• The possibility of a strong El Niño forming later this year
• What these signals could mean for future weather patterns
Are these events connected — or just coincidence?
Let’s take a deeper look.
