Vigilant and Ready: Life as a Roman Frontier Watchman (Video)

The Roman frontier was a dangerous place, and the soldiers who manned the Roman Limes (a network of forts, walls and outposts) along the Rhine frontier had a crucial role to play in keeping the border secure. With just a few men the Roman army could control hundreds of miles of territory.

Watchtower duty was a lonely, monotonous task that required constant vigilance and the ability to communicate quickly and effectively in order to respond to any threats that might arise. What was life like for the Roman soldiers tasked with one of the most important responsibilities in the army?
